The first time I made a real recording in a nice studio it turned out sounding like shit. It wasn’t because the playing was bad, or the recording was bad, or the mix was bad. 20 years after the fact, I’m ready to admit it was because I was a bad person. You see, the engineer and the tape operator were best friends and the tape op was Australian. I finished my portion of the recording on day three of the session and spent the next five days hanging around the control room, drinking cheap beer, and repeatedly calling the Australian tape op “Capstan Kangaroo”. He and the engineer were apparently a couple of humorless dicks that did not appreciate my over-used predictable repartee and went out of their way to accentuate all the less than great parts of the recording. Joke’s on them though because that guy is probably still Australian.
